Wiebke Elzel / Jana Müller Barrikade (2007)
colour photography, 122 x 152 cm

Barricade (2007) is one of up to now seven large-size photographs of both artists in which they pick out the uncanny, the concealed and the fear of these respectively as their central theme. Fear is, according to both artists, a component of life which tries to confine and control a community by a certain set of rules, apparatuses and laws.Thereby, the fear becomes the displaced and reappears as the Other in the copies of the real - the simulacra of novels or films. Here fear fulfils a desire after the shiver, the uncanny and the inconceivable. In their photographs Wiebke Elzel and Jana Müller combine fear with desire and create dreadful-nice scenarios which seem familiar to the observer and remain strange at the same time.
